In a remarkable effort to combat sexual assault on college campuses, USC students have launched an innovative startup called Brave. This initiative, driven by the vision and determination of Kian Abrishami and Grace Miedziak, aims to enhance campus safety through technology and community engagement.

The Vision Behind Brave

The genesis of Brave was a personal experience for Abrishami, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering and computer science, who intervened to prevent a friend's potential assault at a USC party. This incident highlighted the need for discreet and effective safety measures on campus. Partnering with Miedziak, the director of advocacy at the Survivor Support Community at USC, they set out to create a solution.

Bravebands: The Core Innovation

Central to Brave's strategy is the Braveband, a wearable bracelet designed to provide immediate assistance in dangerous situations. The bracelet allows users to discreetly notify their friends with just two taps, sending their exact location and an alert for help. This technology is integrated with a mobile app that enhances its functionality, ensuring users can quickly and quietly call for assistance without needing to access their phones (Dordulian Law Group) (Daily Trojan).

Expanding Reach and Impact

Since its incorporation in March 2023, Brave has developed 15 hardware prototypes and onboarded 200 student beta testers across various campuses, including the University of Rochester, Lehigh, and Northeastern. The startup aims to refine its technology through user feedback and plans to offer the Braveband at no cost to incoming freshmen as part of welcome packages at universities (Daily Trojan).

Brave is also working on partnerships with major brands like Lululemon and Madhappy to design fashionable and discreet versions of the Braveband. These efforts are complemented by social media campaigns to raise awareness and secure funding (Daily Trojan) (UCSD Today).

Key Features and Innovations

1. Mobile Safety App:

At the heart of the startup's offering is a mobile app designed to provide real-time safety features for students. The app includes functionalities such as emergency alerts, GPS tracking, and quick access to campus security. By offering a discreet and efficient way to seek help, the app empowers students to take control of their safety.

The startup also emphasizes the importance of support for survivors of sexual assault. It provides resources for counseling, legal assistance, and peer support groups, ensuring that students have access to the help they need to heal and reclaim their lives.

The Impact on College Campuses

The launch of this startup is poised to make a significant impact on college campuses, starting with USC. By integrating innovative technology with comprehensive educational programs and robust support systems, the initiative aims to reduce the incidence of sexual assault and create a safer environment for all students.

Collaboration and Future Goals

The founders of the startup are keen on collaborating with university administrations, local authorities, and nonprofit organizations to expand their reach and effectiveness. Their ultimate goal is to see their model implemented across colleges nationwide, setting a new standard for campus safety.
